Missing Cat Travels Cross-Country from Florida to Tacoma Before Heartwarming Reunion

What started as a routine day at a Tacoma Coca-Cola plant turned into an incredible cross-country reunion story after a frightened cat named Tio was discovered wandering the facility — more than 3,000 miles from home.

When Eddie spotted the scared orange tabby running around the plant, he knew the cat needed help. Along with Ananda, he safely brought Tio to the Auburn Valley Humane Society, hoping the shelter could identify where he belonged. What shelter staff uncovered was astonishing. Tio had been missing from his home in Orlando, Florida for two weeks.

Thanks to a registered microchip, Auburn Valley Humane Society staff were able to quickly contact Tio’s owner, Saleema, who was shocked and relieved to learn her beloved cat was alive — and somehow all the way across the country in Washington state. From there, the community came together to help bring Tio home.

The shelter immediately coordinated Tio’s return trip by providing a travel carrier, arranging a veterinary health exam, and securing the health certificate required for airline travel. These lifesaving services were made possible through Auburn Valley Humane Society’s Pawsitive Futures Program, an initiative dedicated to keeping pets out of shelters and supporting positive outcomes for animals and families. The program is funded through the Rachael Ray No-Kill Excellence Grant, with expansion support provided by the Konzen Family Foundation.

To complete the journey, AVHS volunteer Chris personally accompanied Tio on an Alaska Airlines flight from Seattle to Orlando, ensuring the adventurous feline made it home safely.

Within hours of landing, Tio was finally reunited with Saleema — ending an unbelievable journey with a joyful homecoming.

“This story is a reminder of how important microchips are and what can happen when compassionate people step in to help,” said Auburn Valley Humane Society. “From the employees who rescued Tio, to the volunteers and supporters who helped get him home, this reunion truly took a community effort.”

For Tio and Saleema, all’s well that ends well.
